Around Dar: Uhuru Street

A couple of weeks ago, Cho and I decided to ignore popular advice and wander around downtown Dar sans men. We were on a mission for kangas. Well, Cho was. I have bought so many kangas since living here that I didn’t want to get in trouble with the husband by buying more. It turns out there is a Swahili saying that goes, “A woman can never be happy until she has 1,000 kangas.” I think they’re right. There are just SO MANY beautiful fabrics to choose from…
We tried practicing our kiswahili with the vendors. Cho got asked for her e-mail address/facebook two different times.
It was fun, and a must-visit for anyone traveling to Dar. I will never buy my kangas anywhere else, as they are half the price here without even haggling.
On a related note, each pattern on a kanga represents something that usually corresponds with the phrase printed on the kanga. Cho found this hilarious article called “The 5 Most Heartbreaking Kangas.” Read it if you want a giggle.Otherwise, that’s all I have for today.
Tutaonana baadaye.
