I wanted to talk about the hotel we stayed at on safari (Tan Swiss Lodge) in case anyone is planning a visit there soon. I wasn’t compensated for this review or anything like that, but it was difficult for me to find information about the hotel other than their website so I wanted to put some out there on the interwebz. The lodge is about 15 minutes from the entrance to Mikumi National Park. We paid about $70 a night for our room, which included breakfast.
Here are a few things I liked about the lodge:
-clean rooms with mosquito nets and little porches
-nice open-air restaurant with good food
-very friendly and helpful staff
-television with cable in the room (there’s not much else to do in Mikumi when you’re finished with safari)
-a playground for the kids, as well as a sitting area with various board games and books
-rabbits, guinea pigs, guinea fowl, and various other pets for the kids to play with
Here are a few things I didn’t like:
-the shower would either give me scorching hot water or freezing cold water, nothing in between
(which is pretty common in Tanzania, but still)
-there is only a shower, no bath, making it difficult to bathe a filthy 1-year-old
-the air conditioning made the most annoying noise all night long, making it difficult to sleep
-we weren’t allowed to bring food from the restaurant in our rooms, which made dining an unpleasant experience when we had a 1-year-old running around the restaurant (no highchairs)
Overall, I liked the little lodge, but probably not enough to stay there again. I’d probably stay at Udzungwa Falls Lodge instead.
